Director of Youth Ministry to direct The Archbishop of York Youth Trust

Robin Rolls has been appointed as the first Director of The Archbishop of York Youth Trust.

The Trustees of the Archbishop of York Youth Trust have made the announcement and are delighted that Robin, currently Director of Youth Ministry for the Diocese of Leicester, is to bring his expertise to enable a new vision.

Robin brings 20 years’ experience in youth ministry. Before his present role as Director of Youth Ministry for Leicester Diocese, he served as Youth Officer for the Diocese of Birmingham. His vision is for empowering young people to make a difference in their community, rooted in a growing faith in Christ.

Robin said. ‘I am thrilled and excited by the challenge of working with the Archbishop of York Youth Trust to empower young people to make a difference. Young people are a not a problem to be solved – they are God’s precious gift to us. And I am particularly delighted to be returning home to Yorkshire!’

The Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Tim Stevens said “Robin brought us a whole new way of thinking about work with young people, from which we have all benefited, and we are delighted he will have the opportunity to use his skills in another field”.

The Archbishop of York, the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu, said, ‘So far the Youth Trust has made some good progress, helping young people to be the change they want to see in the world. But now, with Robin’s appointment, we are going to have lift-off! May God bless the work of the Trust in bringing hope to young people and their communities across the north of England.’

‘youf’ volunteers required

Dear Friends,

I am the coordinator of the Churches Together in Bottesford youth group known as ‘youf’. I have now got two youth groups. Some of my leaders have gone on to do other work for God I am short of leaders.  Both groups would benefit from someone with musical skills because they have a lot of talent.  The Friday group which meets form 7-9pm is for year 8 and up and the Sunday night group is for year 6 and 7 (they meet at 6-8pm).  They both meet twice a month on the first and third weekends.  There is about 16 young people in the Friday night group and the newer Sunday night group  has 8 young people.

I am prepared to pay for transport to and from our village, Bottesford and other agreed expenses.

Do you have one or two people over 18 who have a passion for young people to work in either group.  Please get them to contact me or give me their details.

Report from Local Students working at Kiteto Christian College, Tanzania

“I am attaching an article written by two Christian post A-level students from Loughborough who spent ten weeks of their summer vacation at Kiteto Christian College before starting at university.  Rhianna’ sister and her friend Sabrina Mistry from Anstey leave mid-October for ten weeks to continue with Hannah’s and Rhianna’s work.

All four have received a small grant from the diocese to supplement the considerable sums they have raised themselves for their air fares and living expenses.

Report from Kiteto
Rhianna and I have recently returned from a two month trip to Kiteto Christian College, in Kibaya, Tanzania. For me, it was a return trip. I had been to the same place just before Christmas last year. As soon as I left I was set on returning, as there was so much I still wanted to help with at the school, and so many people I had met that I missed.
On going back to Kibaya, I found many changes had taken place. The school had a new library full of books, a new Bishop for the diocese was about to be inaugurated and Neama, a teacher I had met and worked with during my last visit, had had a baby boy called  Emmanuel.
The purpose of our trip was to help improve the English of the primary school students, so Rhianna and I were acting as Teaching Assistants, taking children who needed extra help out of their regular English lessons and doing one-on-one reading with them. We also took regular classes to the newly set up (and much loved) school library. It was very hard to get the children to leave at the end of each library session; they always said ‘Please teacher, I want to read one more book’. In the afternoons and evenings we ran activities like ball games, drawing, painting and the occasional Tom and Jerry video, as the boarding students have very little to do after school. Every evening after dinner the children sing, dance and pray. We were both a source of great amusement for the kids as we often joined in.
One of the real highlights of our time in Kibaya was being invited to a big Masai celebration in a nearby village. There were hundreds and hundreds of Masai people there, and the singing and dancing went on for two days. It was a truly magical atmosphere and everyone was so welcoming and eager for us to get involved in the celebrations. Rhianna and I got so much out of our trip. It was wonderful to experience a culture so unique and so different from our own, and to see the children we were working with progress, even in such a short space of time. We would also both like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped with our fund-raising. Your kindness was invaluable and so much appreciated.
Hannah Smith and Rhianna Micciche
