Organists course

Leicester & District Organists’ Association are running an afternoon course for pianists on Saturday November 13th commencing at 1.00pm at Osgathorpe Parish Church.  This has been designed for pianists who are often asked at short notice to deputise at their church, when the resident organist is unavailable.
 
The course will include hymn/psalm accompanyment, stop selection, and general advice on playing. Tutors are Simon Headley (Assistant Organist, Leicester Cathedral), and Peter Harris ( Organist of the Parish Church of the Assumption Hinckley).  The cost for the afternoon is £5,light refreshments included. Women’s Inter Faith Sports

Ladies of all faiths are invited to come along for fun, fitness and friendship!

Postgraduate Courses in Interreligious relations at St Philip’s Centre, Leicester

Applications are invited to join postgraduate courses beginning in October 2010. Courses lead to qualifications in Interreligious Relations at Certificate, Diploma and MA levels and are validated through De Montfort University.

Study is part-time and takes place on given Saturdays. There is a strong linkage into local communities and a placement module in a context of interreligious encounter.

Planning an away day?   Building a new team?   Grappling with change?
 
This is not a teaching session!  This is an open space to allow you to engage with some of the tools available for team dynamics, vision building, and understanding change.  Drop in when you like and work on your own “stuff” with others and members of the M & M team.  Coffee and sweets available, drop in when you like.  Mike, Nicky and Stuart will be there all day to assist you.

CHURCHWARDENS AND PCC OFFICERS TRAINING
Saturday 26th June, Christ the King, Beaumont Way, Beaumont Leys, LE4 1DS – 9.30am – 12.30pm
 
This training morning is being offered as an introduction to the work for new churchwardens, treasurers and PCC secretaries and as a refresher for experienced PCC officers as well as providing time and space to reflect with others on the challenges and opportunities of these vital ministries.
 
A number of workshops will be provided which consider different dimensions and duties and roles of churchwardens, highlighting resources available.  There will also be workshops run specifically for PCC secretaries and PCC treasurers.  It is anticipated that there will be information packs available from each of the workshops to all participants attending the day.

‘A CHOICE OPPORTUNITY’ Tools for the Task of Ministry
Tuesday 6th July, St Philip’s Church, Evington Road, Leicester, LE2 1QN – 9.30am – 4pm
 
A series of workshops looking at particular tools we need for the work of developing a Christian community that learns, grows and shines out!
 
In the morning there are two workshops on offer.  Nicky McGinty will consider how we engage with individuals whose behaviour can, in one way or another, be challenging and threaten to derail relationships and or groups, while Mike Harrison will look at the how and why of mentoring others in the faith.
 
In the afternoon Stuart Burns will address the subject of Helping Adults Learn in ways which are transformative, while Liz Hudson-Oliff will look at ‘Communicating as Church’ – what is it we communicate and how our communication can convey the Christian message better.

18 month diocesan course on mission and Fresh Expressions

We are pleased to announce details of a major new course to equip all those involved in leading or interested in setting up a Fresh Expression of church.

The eighteen month Mission Shaped Ministry course starts this September and will explore discerning, starting and maturing a Fresh Expression of church. It comprises of six week nights and six Saturday sessions and is being hosted locally by Stuart Burns, Tim Woolley and Barry Hill, with a number of guest speakers (both nationally known and respected leaders in their fields and locally based, experienced, practitioners).

Royal School of Church Music scholarships

The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) is offering organ scholarships to two young organists at the 2010 Bath Summer Course for Young People. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to play the four-manual Klais organ in the city’s splendid Abbey church; the setting for some of the choral services. They will assist the Course Organist in playing for rehearsals and services during the popular week-long event, which is based at Kingswood School and runs from 23rd – 29th August

Course for Volunteer Organists

Tuesday 2nd to Wednesday 3rd March 2010.

An overnight course aimed at pianists who have volunteered to play the organ in their church.
The course includes sessions on hymn playing, accompanying services, coping with organ stops, simple use of pedals and useful repertoire – an essential survival package! Many churches have supported their Volunteer Organist by paying for the course as ‘in-service training’ and many former course members have reported on the immediate impact that this training has had in the worship of their churches. Combining informal and sympathetic teaching with the pleasures of residence in the Cathedral Close. These courses have become a popular focus for pianists who have been ‘thrown in at the deep end’ with organ playing at their church.

We will be looking at many of these. Members of the class will be encouraged to discuss their personal family rituals and how the Christmas cornucopia has changed during their life-times.

Week 2: Christmas Carols: Their history and meaning.
Week 3: The Victorians: Did Charles Dickens invent the modern Christmas?
Week 4: Santa Claus and modern innovations.
Week 5: Ghost stories, poems and other Christmas literature.

“BEING THE BODY” – Explorations into All-Age Worship

 Thursday 12th November, at St Philip’s Church, Evington Road, Leicester – 10:00am-3.30pm

Being the body—words that are easy to say but less easy to live out when creating worship for the whole gathered community. If you have struggled over how to communicate to all ages and address the multiple learning needs of the congregation then this day is for you.

Looking at both Eucharistic and non-Eucharistic worship, the day aims to equip participants to create multi-sensory and multi-stage worship for the whole people of God.

The Bishop’s Certificate in Youth Ministry

BCYM logo blackThis is our own in-house course recognised by the School of Ministry here at Church House, and developed over the last few months with youth work professionals from across the country. This six-module course is packed with information and resources to enable you to become a more confident and able Youth Worker in your own local setting. The six modules cover such topics as: Young people and worship; Detached work and work on the streets with young people; Self harm; Challenging behaviour; Theologies of youth work; Youth work in open youth clubs; Growing ourselves as youth work practitioners.

The course will be run on both Saturdays and Evenings. The times for Saturday sessions will be 9:00am – 3:00pm, and three evening will be needed to correspond to one Saturday.

Participants on the course can swap evenings or Saturdays to suit their own particular needs.

We are also pleased to announce that the course is now available to do on-line. The overall cost of the course is £75 and we are able to offer bursaries and group discounts if finding this whole cost is a problem.

This is an inter-denominational event for musicians who are often asked at short notice, to play for services where the resident organist is indisposed, or more likely, where the particular church or chapel, has no organist.
