Guidance on inter faith issues relating to baptisms – request for assistance

An increasing number of requests are being received for guidance across a variety of issues with inter faith aspects eg inter faith marriage, use of multi faith spaces, etc. In response to this, a project is being undertaken to provide guidance on a range of issues.
One of these is in the area of baptisms where there are increasing requests for Godparents or ‘sponsors’ of other faiths and questions about the initiation into another religious tradition of children from a mixed faith marriage in addition to baptism.

If you have any particular cases or stories relating to baptisms in inter faith contexts we would like to hear about them, and about how the issues were addressed. Please contact me at john.hall@stphilipscentre.co.uk

The Revd Canon Andrew Wingate

The Bishop announces the retirement of The Revd Canon Andrew Wingate, as Bishop’s Inter Faith Adviser and Director of St Philip’s Centre with effect from 31 January 2010.

Andrew expects to take up a part time consultancy teaching role in the Church of Sweden for a year from April 2010.

———————————————————

A message from Bishop Tim,

As you may be aware, Andrew Wingate retires from the position of Bishop’s Inter Faith Adviser and Director of St Philip’s Centre on 31 January 2010.

Andrew moved to Leicester in May 2000 when he was appointed Diocesan Director of Ministry and Training and a Canon Theologian of Leicester Cathedral.  In September 2003 he became Director of Inter Faith Relations and Co-ordinator of Lay Training and later took up the additional role of Director of the St Philip’s Centre.  In December 2006 he was appointed as a member of the College of Chaplains to the Queen.

Andrew’s great achievement has been to establish the St Philip’s Centre as a major forum of interfaith work regionally, nationally and internationally.

In recognition for Andrew’s commitment to the Diocese we would like to give him an appropriate gift.  If you would like to contribute to this gift, please could you send your cheque made payable to “Leicester Diocesan Board of Finance” to Church House, St Martin’s East, Leicester LE1 5FX.  Please write Andrew Wingate’s name on the back of the cheque.

Many thanks

+Tim
