As we move into Lent, a time for self denial and spiritual reflection, our thoughts go out to those who don’t have enough in the first place. Bishop Tim highlighted the problem of food poverty in News & Views and asked for support for FareShare, a valuable initiative to find a use for good food which would otherwise be wastefully disposed of.
One group which relies on charitable support like this is destitute asylum seekers. Because of concerns about the number of asylum seekers currently destitute in Leicester (particularly women, who can be especially vulnerable in this situation) a coalition of the Diocese of Leicester, Refugee Action, British Red Cross and Foundation Housing Association have developed a project to find long term solutions.
Destitute asylum seekers typically use all their energies in finding food to eat and a bed for the night. They don’t have the energy to focus on the things that might change their situation in the long term – including chasing up lawyers and exploring whether there’s anything else that can be done with their asylum claim.
The Fresh Start project will satisfy the immediate needs of up to 6 destitute asylum seeking women at a time, by guaranteeing accommodation and food for up to 6 months, while Refugee Action’s Specialist worker explores with them why they became destitute and looks at finding long-term solutions to their problems.
We’ve found a property, but there is a good deal of work to be done to it and the project will cost quite a lot to run. We’ve applied to various trust funds and money has already been committed to the project by Refugee Action and British Red Cross, to add to a Mustard Seed grant, a large individual donation and money from sponsorship.
However, it’s donations of another kind which would be particularly welcome from Leicester Anglicans:- we need new bed linen for 6 single beds and we need to collect up crockery (in good condition) for the house.
Would you be able to help by donating bed linen or crockery to this project?
If so, perhaps you would contact me on aidanh@refugee-action.org.uk or 0116 261 6205.
Many thanks for your generosity.
