HMP Leicester: Knitting campaign!

Nearly everyday children come to HMP Leicester to visit their dads/ brothers/ uncles or Granddads. The experience can be daunting. To make the visit easier the Chaplaincy has teamed up with the Mothers Union to make kitted teddies for the children to play with whilst in the Prison Visits Hall and to take home with them, to help them to have positive memories of their day.

We need your help, the teddies take less than an evening to knit, but they mean so much to the children. The pattern is below, could you or your group help?

Completed teddies are being collected at the Mothers Union office in Church House, opening hours are: Tues, Wed & Fri 9.30-12.30 am. Address: 5 St Martins East, Leicester LE1 5FX

Thank you

Penny in the Pound Appeal

A borehole in Gwanda

A borehole in Gwanda

News from the projects supported by the Penny in the Pound Appeal for clean water and sanitation projects in Afghanistan, El Salvador and Zimbabwe have recently been received and are detailed in the May 2010 update available here.

We believe water, sanitation and hygiene education are crucial for poverty reduction and form the bedrock of a healthy, productive society. Without health and education, people will continue to remain trapped in the stranglehold of poverty and disease. That is why your support is so vital for people in the poorest areas of our world and so thank you for all those who have generously supported the appeal, and if you would like to find out more or donate then please contact the office on 0116 248 7424 or Email Peter.Yates@LecCofE.org

I have the honour and the privilege of writing the ‘Roll of Honour’ for the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert’s Own) 1939-1945(1946-1947).

The first ever written Memorial dedicated to the 165 members and the 4 attached personnel of the Regiment who sadly never came back.

Amongst their number is one;
Trooper Thomas (Tom) Edward SUTTON, 553958
3 Troop ‘B’ Sqn
11th Hussars ‘Prince Albert’s Own’
(Cherrypickers)
 ’Desert Rats’
Royal Armoured Corps

Son of: Frederick and Alice Sutton, of: 3 Granby Road Aylestone Leicester.

I would be very grateful for any help or advice afforded me regarding this enquiry.

Small Altar Required

Does anyone have a surplus small Altar that we could use as a nave altar in Leicester’s oldest church – St. Nicholas? Our sightlines mean only a small percentage of our growing congregation can see the current altar, which is too large to move into the smaller space on our Chancel step.
If you may be able to assist in our search please contact Barry Naylor (07757853621 or barry.naylor@leccofe.org)

Lent Appeal 2010 FareShare Leicester

Bishop Tim's Lent Appeal 2010

Bishop Tim's Lent Appeal 2010

Fresh Start Project needs your help

As we move into Lent, a time for self denial and spiritual reflection, our thoughts go out to those who don’t have enough in the first place. Bishop Tim highlighted the problem of food poverty in News & Views and asked for support for FareShare, a valuable initiative to find a use for good food which would otherwise be wastefully disposed of.

One group which relies on charitable support like this is destitute asylum seekers. Because of concerns about the number of asylum seekers currently destitute in Leicester (particularly women, who can be especially vulnerable in this situation) a coalition of the Diocese of Leicester, Refugee Action, British Red Cross and Foundation Housing Association have developed a project to find long term solutions.

Destitute asylum seekers typically use all their energies in finding food to eat and a bed for the night. They don’t have the energy to focus on the things that might change their situation in the long term – including chasing up lawyers and exploring whether there’s anything else that can be done with their asylum claim.

The Fresh Start project will satisfy the immediate needs of up to 6 destitute asylum seeking women at a time, by guaranteeing accommodation and food for up to 6 months, while Refugee Action’s Specialist worker explores with them why they became destitute and looks at finding long-term solutions to their problems.

We’ve found a property, but there is a good deal of work to be done to it and the project will cost quite a lot to run. We’ve applied to various trust funds and money has already been committed to the project by Refugee Action and British Red Cross, to add to a Mustard Seed grant, a large individual donation and money from sponsorship.

However, it’s donations of another kind which would be particularly welcome from Leicester Anglicans:- we need new bed linen for 6 single beds and we need to collect up crockery (in good condition) for the house.

Would you be able to help by donating bed linen or crockery to this project?

If so, perhaps you would contact me on aidanh@refugee-action.org.uk or 0116 261 6205.

 Many thanks for your generosity.
Aidan Hallett (St Andrew’s Aylestone)

Latest Update from Penny in the Pound Appeal

Imaging getting up in the morning to go to work or school and there is no bathroom to go to for a wash, no lavatory, no running water. Perhaps you would have to go to the end of the road to use a latrine, passing stinking gutters on your way!
Safe water and sanitation are human rights and basic needs for healthy living, yet 2.5 billion people have no access to basic sanitation and nearly 1 billion do not have access to safe water either.
The Penny in the Pound Appeal has raised over £225,000 to provide clean water, sanitation and fresh hope for our partners through Christian Aid projects.

The latest update from the projects is available HERE
If you would like to make a donation a Gift Aid form is HERE

Feed a family for a fiver this Christmas

Following the violence against Christians in Orissa, India at Christmas 2007 and in August 2008 there are still some 910 families belonging to the Diocese of Phulbani left homeless and destitute now that the state has closed down its official refugee camps. The Bishop is trying to supply each family with a 15kg sack of rice and a 3kg bag of lentils to help them at Christmas. Depending on the size of the family that could last for 3 to 5 days. The cost of this food is just over £5 per family.
Can you help?
