Guidance on inter faith issues relating to baptisms – request for assistance

An increasing number of requests are being received for guidance across a variety of issues with inter faith aspects eg inter faith marriage, use of multi faith spaces, etc. In response to this, a project is being undertaken to provide guidance on a range of issues.
One of these is in the area of baptisms where there are increasing requests for Godparents or ‘sponsors’ of other faiths and questions about the initiation into another religious tradition of children from a mixed faith marriage in addition to baptism.

If you have any particular cases or stories relating to baptisms in inter faith contexts we would like to hear about them, and about how the issues were addressed. Please contact me at john.hall@stphilipscentre.co.uk

Leicester’s Young Net nearly 10k for Malaria

On Sunday 25th April 2010, Leicester’s Interfaith Youth Hub raised an incredible ?8500 as part of World Malaria Day. Over 30 young volunteers worked tirelessly as 250 people attended Leicester’s First Ever Multifaith Dinner for Malaria.

After months of preparation, the Leicester Interfaith Youth Hub which consists of young people aged 16-25, planned and ran the entire event including providing some of the entertainment. One group performed a drama piece, called “Supply and Demand” on the injustice of malaria. Another performed “Faith Monologues”, on their own feelings and personal commitment to the cause. A final group performed “Malaria Madness”, a comedy extravaganza written by themselves, featuring an African Zulu Chief, a Mad Scientist and a special appearance from Malaria Man!

The Leicester Interfaith Youth Hub is a joint initiative between the St Philip’s Centre and the Faiths Act fellowship programme. Hub Volunteer, Shelina Patel said, “I was really excited to take part in the dinner. I think it’s really important to take action against malaria; so we did it by writing, producing and performing in a malaria themed comedy! I couldn’t believe we got a standing ovation at the end. It was all great fun!”

The unique event at the Empire Banqueting Suite, was attended by 250 people from all faiths and backgrounds in Leicester. The attendees were told that purchasing a bed net for ?5 would protect an African family for up to 5 years against catching malaria, a disease which kills a million people every year, mostly pregnant women and young children.

The Assistant Bishop of Leicester, Revd Christopher Boyle said, “I am absolutely delighted at how these young people have taken the initiative on the cause of malaria. Having been Bishop in Northern Malawi, I know how crucial it is to take action against this preventable and treatable disease. The efforts of the Leicester Interfaith Youth Hub will make a real difference to the lives of 3400 Africans, by buying bed nets to protect them against malaria”.

The event was part of a global series of events for World Malaria Day, as part of the Faiths Act Network. Young adults from different faith backgrounds have been taking action around the world. These have included a Night Under Nets in London, film screenings in California, a football tournament in Montreal and an evening of African Dance and Drumming in Washington DC.

Statement by Faith Leaders in Leicester and Leicestershire ahead of the General Election 2010

We speak as leaders of the many faith traditions in Leicester and Leicestershire to those from our own faith, to each others faith traditions and to the people of our city and county.

The forthcoming general election will present many opportunities for legitimate debate about many pressing issues in our society, including the economy, immigration, employment, the community and social cohesion. Such debate must be addressed in an informed and balanced way according to the highest standards of civilised society and mutual respect. As faith leaders we do not endorse any particular political party, but we acknowledge that the challenges facing us will require clear policies and strong leadership from elected politicians. We understand that there is widespread dissatisfaction with politicians and the political process, but we urge all people to vote.

Our different faiths charge us with the pursuit of the common good of all people. We believe the presence in our communities of people from different ethnic, cultural and religious origins is a strength of our society. We are therefore committed to the development of our nation, and to Leicester and Leicestershire in particular, as a thriving, multi-faith, multi-cultural, multi-racial and cohesive, inter-cultural society and will work at every opportunity for its continued success.

We cannot stand by when certain sections of our community, especially those in particular need and who find themselves marginalised and disadvantaged, are maligned, misrepresented and singled out for abuse. We wish to express in the strongest terms our distaste for any individuals or groups using a political platform to destabilise communities through the use of misinformation, fear, scare stories or inflammatory rhetoric. We therefore urge all people not to vote for any racist party in the forthcoming general or local elections, and to ensure that their misguided policies are challenged at every opportunity. We are clear that the voice of faith and of all people of good will must counter racist voices.

We all have the responsibility to work for a more just society, and we commit to our prayers all those standing in the forthcoming elections.

Moving Stories from the Occupied Palestinian Territories121

This edition of Moving Stories gives reflections from three people’s viewpoints.
Zleikha, a fiercely independent and driven woman in Hebron, Al-Khalil speaking about the damage caused by the confiscation of water pipes and the trampling of his crops, and a reflection by Drew Herbert about the Gaza Freedom March on 31st December.
Out of all this comes through a message of people’s hopes for freedom.

Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January

Holocaust Memorial Day
Many Christians seem to forget that Jesus was a Jew, that Mary was too and so were the Apostles and many others among the first Christians.  It is a great blessing for Christians to get to know Judaism and to meet their Jewish neighbours, often described as our ‘elder brothers and sisters’ in faith. We must not allow the issues and pain surrounding Christian /Jewish relations down the ages to put us off deepening relationships of friendship and exchange with our Jewish neighbours.
On the website www.hmd.org.uk is a link to a list of events, so you will be able to find one in the county. HMD not only addresses the genocide of the Holocaust but others and there are stories of survivors from the Rwandan genocide, for example.
The theme for HMD 2010 is The Legacy of Hope

Operation Noah reports from Copenhagen

Daily film videos from the UN climate summit in Copenhagen are part of the December plan of action to make sure that the voice of faith is heard at this “make or break” time in our history. These are on the new ON website www.operationnoah.org

Operation Noah, the ecumenical community which campaigns exclusively on climate change, is working with a US web-based organisation, Odyssey Networks, to bring the voices of religious wisdom as monks, nuns, rabbis and holy men and women converge on the Danish capital.  “It’s quite an ambition,” said ON’s Mark Dowd, who will be fronting many of the reports. “We’re following everyone from the Archbishop of Canterbury, to youngsters from the Christian-Muslim forum, Benedictine and Franciscan nuns, Hindu gurus, and Buddhist monks.
