HMP Leicester: Knitting campaign!

Nearly everyday children come to HMP Leicester to visit their dads/ brothers/ uncles or Granddads. The experience can be daunting. To make the visit easier the Chaplaincy has teamed up with the Mothers Union to make kitted teddies for the children to play with whilst in the Prison Visits Hall and to take home with them, to help them to have positive memories of their day.

We need your help, the teddies take less than an evening to knit, but they mean so much to the children. The pattern is below, could you or your group help?

Completed teddies are being collected at the Mothers Union office in Church House, opening hours are: Tues, Wed & Fri 9.30-12.30 am. Address: 5 St Martins East, Leicester LE1 5FX

Thank you

Are you able to accommodate a group of 10 – 14 hard working, keen and able volunteers?

Do you manage an open space or facilities that are in need of maintenance or repair? Nextsteps Leics is running a project managing Work Focused Training across Leicester. This is a programme for 18-24 year olds who have been unemployed for over 6 months.
As part of the 12 week programme one day has been set aside for team building activities, in order to develop interpersonal and team working skills.
Nextstep is able to offer a group of 10-14 keen, hard working people, under the supervision of a trained tutor, for 1 day a week undertaking a range of activities that will allow them to essentially work as a team.
The next course will commence in 3-4 weeks time. Nextstep aim to start a new course every 12 weeks so there will be similar future opportunities.

Nominate Your Hidden Hero today – Leicestershire’s Hidden Hero of the Year 2010

Do you know a Hidden Hero?
Is there a Hero hiding near you?
There are thousands of Hidden Heroes across Leicestershire giving their time for free, helping to make a difference to their local community. This can be something small or a lifetime commitment. From spending an hour a week helping local children to read or painting a fence to a full time role supporting somebody with learning disabilities – they are all Hidden Heroes.
As part of national Volunteers’ Week, 1 – 7 June, Voluntary Action LeicesterShire is looking for Leicestershire’s Hidden Hero for 2010.
Local people of Leicestershire are invited to nominate anyone who they believe deserves recognition for their contribution, the only criteria being that your chosen person has volunteered in some capacity in the past year.
Nominated heroes will be shortlisted by a panel of judges with the top five entered into a public vote to find Leicestershire’s Hidden Hero of the year.
Nominations can be submitted online by clicking here explaining why your hero is special. Nominations must be received by 24 May 2010 to be entered.
Is there a hero hiding near you? If so give them the recognition they deserve – nominate them today.

Communion Service Cover

Event Date: 16th May 2010

Is anyone able to volunteer to take Asfordby’s family communion service on 16th May at 10.30am? Although it is billed as a family communion, the children (all 2 of them!) go out to Sunday Club for half of the service. It is therefore a simplified liturgy with hymns and an adult address – copies of the service order available in advance. This would enable me to go on a much needed retreat that weekend! Thanks, Sue

Would you like to join the Launde Abbey volunteer team?

We often need help in our gardens and throughout the year at our regular fund-raising events.

Could you spare some time regularly to help out in our gardens with weeding, pruning and general tidying or do you have specific horticultural expertise that might assist our gardening team?

Could you help at one of our fund-raising events?  There are many opportunities for people with different skills to get involved with the fund-raising work of the Abbey, either by manning stalls, helping us prepare for events or clearing up afterwards?  Could you perhaps act as a steward or help us prepare lunches and teas?

Whatever your skills we would love to hear from you if you have some spare time during the year, either on a regular basis or for one-off events.

Please contact Suzanne Page at Launde Abbey in the first instance on 01572 717254 or via e-mail:  Suzanne@launde.org.uk
